Seventeen: No Rehearsal

The emotional piece when an only child turns seventeen is rarely a single feeling. It’s a layered, contradictory mix of pride, anticipatory grief, fierce protectiveness, and a sudden, sharp awareness that the clock is running out on the version of childhood you’ve known together. There’s no younger sibling waiting in the wings, so every milestone carries the full weight of “this is the only time.” The high-school years are winding down, independence starts to feel real, and the ordinary days begin to feel a little more precious. But this year is not only about what’s ending. It’s also the bright beginning of everything she’s about to do.

There’s deep pride in watching her step into who she’s becoming—the kind of pride that sits right beside the quiet realization that the childhood version of her is almost finished. You poured years of attention into one person, and now you get to see what she does with it. The same heart that feels the weight of “this is the last stretch” is also full of joy for the places she’s headed, the music she’ll keep making, the life she’s already starting to build.

There is no rehearsal for this year. Just the real thing: one child, seventeen, standing at the edge of great things, and a parent who gets to watch her go.

The greatest gift you can give your child is the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.  Denis Waitley
